An €11.1 million contract covers around 400 metres of harbour, three floating pontoons, 100 municipal berths and the access road. The works have been awarded, but the start date, traffic phases and berth allocation remain open.
The construction contract has been signed
Primorje-Gorski Kotar County reported on 14 September that the construction contract for reconstructing Rab harbour and its access road had been signed. The contracting authority is the Rab County Port Authority; the notice names GP Krk d.d. and BSK Commerce d.o.o. as contractors.
The contract is worth exactly €11,101,448.60 including VAT. This is a concrete construction award, not merely a statement of intent. The published notice nevertheless gives no dependable date for the start of work or opening.
Three pontoons will provide 100 municipal berths
Three floating pontoons with a total of 100 new municipal berths are planned for the harbour. According to the county, the contract covers about 400 metres of harbour and the associated infrastructure.
Municipal berths serve local needs. They are not the same as freely bookable visitor berths in a marina. The published documents do not yet explain who will receive a berth, what criteria will apply or when applications will open.
The reconstruction extends to the access road
The project does not end at the quay. It includes around 850 metres of the municipal RB1 road from the DM area to Slavija and resurfacing from Slavija to Rt sv. Ante.
The project description also names work on water, wastewater and electronic communications infrastructure. For residents, deliveries and visitors, the immediate everyday effect will therefore be felt not only in the harbour but also on the access route.
€11.1 million is not the project’s total value
When the funding agreement was signed in May 2025, the transport ministry put the entire project at more than €14.3 million. The newly announced €11.1 million, by contrast, is the signed construction contract including VAT.
Both figures belong to the same project but measure different things. Planning, supervision or other components may be included in the total project value without being part of the current works contract. Adding the two sums would therefore be wrong.
The procurement plan allows 15 months
The port authority’s procurement plan provides for a 15-month contract period for the construction works. This describes the intended delivery framework for the contract.
It is not a published opening date. Without a confirmed start, possible construction phases and later acceptance procedures, it cannot be converted into a reliable calendar date for completion.
Traffic arrangements and harbour access remain open
The next practical details that matter to residents and travellers have not yet been published: which road sections will be worked on when, whether the harbour will remain accessible throughout, and where pedestrians, deliveries and vehicles will move during each phase.
Until an official construction notice is available, neither a full closure nor permanently unrestricted access is confirmed. Before travelling to the harbour area, check current notices from the city, port authority and HAK.
Why the project is more than a cosmetic change for Rab
One hundred municipal berths could change everyday life for local boat owners, while utility and road works will reorder a long-used urban space. The benefit, however, depends on how access, allocation and operations are ultimately organised.
The distinction matters to visitors too: a renewed harbour may improve arrival and movement, but it promises neither extra tourist berths nor a disruption-free construction period.
What is confirmed — and what remains open
The signed construction contract worth €11,101,448.60 including VAT, around 400 metres of harbour, three floating pontoons, 100 municipal berths, work on roughly 850 metres of access road and a planned 15-month contract period are confirmed.
The start of construction, exact phases, traffic arrangements, harbour access, completion date and later allocation of berths remain open. These points cannot be inferred from the contract value or general project descriptions.
