The 4 October fire-service update for Kula Norinska and Vid is retained as a chronology. Police additionally report on a 3 October fire in the Pod Gredom protected area and a 55-year-old suspect. The investigation news is not a new fire alert.

New police information on a fire in the protected area

On 9 October, Dubrovnik-Neretva police published an investigation update on a fire in the Pod Gredom ornithological reserve near Metković. A 55-year-old man is suspected of setting reeds alight there on 3 October to clear an area for bird hunting. According to police, wind spread the fire across around 100 hectares in total, including protected habitats and farmland.

Police say the man was handed over to police custody with a criminal complaint. This is an allegation, not a final conviction. The authority describes repeated flare-ups and full control on the morning of 9 October; damage assessment was still ongoing. That date does not constitute a new extinguishment announcement on 11 October.

The following sections separately document the fire-service report of 4 October for Kula Norinska and Vid. The police notice does not explicitly link its case to each of those individual response areas. We therefore do not extend the suspicion indiscriminately to every fire in the area or replace the earlier chronology with a supposedly single cause.

The later report changes the morning picture

The Croatian Firefighting Association, HVZ, added a 19:00 evening update to its report on fires in Dalmatia on 4 October 2026. It stated that the fire at Kula Norinska had been contained. A new fire at Vid near Metković, however, was still occupying response crews.

These two locations should not be combined into one imprecise alert. The sequence of updates also matters: the earlier daytime report still described the Kula Norinska fire as active. Sharing only that morning update leaves out the subsequent developments.

03

Kula Norinska: work on the ground continued after firefighting

The fire at Kula Norinska was reported on 3 October. According to HVZ, two Canadair CL-415 aircraft supported ground crews; containment was confirmed on 4 October. Some firefighters were then able to transfer to the new incident at Vid.

“Contained” in an incident report is not the same as a final “extinguished” announcement. The practical distinction is visible here: the fire service continued to announce follow-up work and monitoring at the sites. A local closure or emergency access route is therefore not open simply because the large smoke plume is less conspicuous.

04

Vid: houses defended, overnight watch announced

For Vid, HVZ states that the alarm was raised on 4 October at 14:00 and describes difficult-to-access marshy terrain. At 19:00, the responsible commander reported that houses had been defended and that, with aerial support, the fire was being kept under control. Four Canadair aircraft took part in this operation.

An overnight watch and follow-up work were announced for both fire sites. This is the confirmed evening update. It does not allow us to anticipate either complete extinguishment later or an unchanged situation the following morning.

What the fire-service report of 4 October did not say

The incident report at the time provided no reliable basis for speculation about the cause. It was also not evidence of an area-wide evacuation of the Neretva region. The newly added police notice about Pod Gredom is a separate source and does not explicitly assign every earlier operation to the same case.

For travellers, place names and timestamps remain more important than a general slogan such as “Dalmatia is burning”. Check new notices for the route you actually intend to take and follow local instructions. The incident chronology retained here documents 4 October at 19:00; it is not a current fire alert or a live feed.

06

Keeping your distance helps response crews

HVZ advises reporting observed smoke or fire via 193 or 112, describing the location clearly and mentioning people at risk. The association also explicitly warns against approaching a fire to watch, photograph or film it and thereby obstructing firefighting.

Keep access routes clear and do not drive to a fire site to check its condition yourself. The competent authorities are the right source for a new assessment. Even after a visibly successful operation, consideration remains necessary while firefighters secure the area and extinguish remaining hotspots.
