Orange means a local severe-weather risk today
DHMZ has orange thunderstorm warnings in place on 19 September for the Knin, Split and Dubrovnik regions. Depending on the region, the warning windows run until 16:00 or 17:00. Locally severe thunderstorms, short bursts of intense rain and storm-force gusts are expected; hail and flash flooding are possible in places.
Orange describes an elevated danger level, not continuous severe weather in every bay. A few kilometres can separate dry conditions from an intense thunderstorm cell.
Bora and north-westerlies add to the risk at sea
The morning DHMZ Adriatic forecast mentions local thunderstorms and possible bora and north-westerly gusts of 35 to 50 knots through midday. Parts of the southern Adriatic also have a yellow wind warning, with gusts of 35 to 45 knots expected until 15:00.
The prevailing wind may look weaker while a thunderstorm gust increases sharply for a short time. That difference is crucial for paddleboards, kayaks and small open boats.
HAK has not reported a general maritime disruption
HAK’s update at 08:37 on 19 September reports no difficulties in general ferry and catamaran traffic. A weather warning and an actually cancelled sailing are two different pieces of information.
Line 433 is operating to a changed timetable through 23 September. This is a planned variation, not evidence of a current thunderstorm or bora cancellation.
Wet roads are most difficult inside a storm cell
HAK warns of wet and slippery roads. Heavy rain reduces visibility, water can collect in low points, and crosswinds affect motorhomes, trailers and motorcycles more strongly than ordinary cars.
Do not drive through underpasses or flooded sections based on personal judgement. A short delay is more sensible than entering water of unknown depth.
A running catamaran is not clearance for a paddleboard
Large passenger vessels operate with professional crews, defined operating limits and continuous weather information. The fact that they are sailing says nothing about whether a private trip by paddleboard, inflatable boat or small motorboat is sensible.
Stay off the water when thunderstorms threaten, end trips early and do not wait for the first lightning over your bay. Metal masts, exposed shorelines and open water are not places to shelter from a storm.
What travellers should do through the afternoon
Before driving or crossing by sea, first check the DHMZ warning map for your region, then HAK and finally the specific operator. Plan outdoor activities so that a solid indoor shelter remains quickly accessible.
Secure loose items on balconies and boats, do not wait beneath trees or unsecured parasols, and take SRUUK warning messages seriously. Call 112 in an immediate emergency.
Conditions are expected to ease towards evening
The marine forecast expects weather to ease gradually by the end of the day. This is a forecast, not a guarantee of the exact timing at an individual location.
The sea may remain rough after an orange warning expires, and local damage or flooded roads do not disappear automatically. The latest local information remains decisive.
